New tires should be driven for the first few hundred miles on dry roads. This allows the tread to shed parting agents and antioxidants applied during manufacturing. Until the tread surface is slightly roughened, the tire will not deliver its full gripping capability.
During this initial period, hard acceleration and heavy braking should be avoided. Aggressive driving can cause tire to rim slip, as the lubricant used during mounting may temporarily reduce adhesion between the tire and wheel.
Exercise extra care when driving on new tires. Winter tires, in particular, require a short break-in period before reaching full winter performance.
